Outside, a separate group of police officers and outriders on motorcycles waited their turn.

Anwar is expected to take his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at 5pm today.

The palace had named him prime minister at lunchtime following a Conference of Rulers meeting in the morning for a way out of the four-week post-election political deadlock.
