As of tonight, more flood victims in Selangor, Perak and Pahang; drop in four other states

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — The number of flood victims in Selangor, Perak and Pahang has surged while four other states of Johor, Kelantan, Sarawak and Melaka showed a decrease as of tonight.

In Selangor, the Disaster Info website of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) said the state recorded an increase to 1,321 victims (from 317 families) compared to 800 (200 families) this morning.

A total of 20 relief centres are still operating in the state, namely four in the district of Kuala Selangor, four in Sepang, and three each in Sabak Bernam, Klang, Petaling and Hulu Langat.

In Perak, flood victims increased to 642 people (188 families) as of 8pm, compared to 540 (153 families) at 8am.

All the victims are taking shelter at 10 relief centres including three newly opened, namely at SK Alor Pongsu in Kerian, Kampung Sungai Baru Trong community hall in Larut Matang Selama (LMS) and SK Layang-Layang Kiri in Perak Tengah.

Several districts in the state continued to see a decrease in flood victims, particularly at SMK Raja Shahriman Beruas, SMK Layang-Layang Kiri and Sekolah Agama Rakyat Shafie Batu Hampar.

In Johor, three districts are still affected by flash floods, namely Tangkak, Kluang and Segamat but the number of victims have reduced to 289 as of 8pm compared to 325 people in the morning.

The Johor District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) in a statement said all the victims (from 72 families) were being housed in five relief centres.

It said 39 people were placed at the Batu Badak hall and 14 people are still at the Tasek community hall in Segamat while only six evacuees were at the Kampung Ithnin Maarof hall in Kluang.

Tangkak sheltered the most victims following flash floods, with 122 at SK Simpang 5 Darat and 108 at Sekolah Agama Simpang 5 Darat.

JPBD also informed that Sungai Lenik (Ladang Cha’ah) in Segamat was still at the danger level with a reading of 6.19 metres but weather throughout the state was clear except for Segamat and Batu Pahat which were reported cloudy.

In Kelantan, flood victims dropped to 1,053 people (364 families) as of 8pm compared to 1,483 (509 families) this morning.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s Disaster Info website, all evacuees are currently housed at six relief centres in Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas involving SK Gual Tinggi, SK Tok Deh, SK Gual Periok, Masjid Mukim Padang Licin, Putat Tujoh hall and SK Kubang Qual.

In Pahang, there was a slight increase to 272 victims (83 families) in Raub placed in eight relief centres as of 8pm compared to 236 (70 families) this evening.

A total of 143 victims are currently at the Kemas Gali activity centre while the rest are housed at Kampung Pia multipurpose hall (39 people), SK Tersang (28) and 18 people each at SK Muhammad Jabar and Kampung Ria hall.

In addition, community halls at Kampung Sungai Pasu and Kampung Sengkela each housed 10 victims, with another six victims at Masjid Kampung Kuala Semantan.

In Melaka, numbers in the state increased to 48 victims (12 families) as at 8pm compared to 37 victims (12 families) at 8am.

The affected victims are from Kampung Bukit Tambun, Kampung Bukit Balai, Kampung Pulau, Kampung Belimbing and Kampung Panchor.

All the victims are housed at the Durian Tunggal State Constituency Development and Coordinating Committee Office hall.

In Sarawak, flood victims housed at the Medamit hall in Limbang saw a slight drop to 123 people as of 7pm today compared to 133 people at 3pm.

According to the Sarawak state disaster management committee, all the victims came from 39 families from the area at the far end of Jalan Medamit in the district. — Bernama
