Six temporary relief centres opened in Kedah following flash floods

ALOR SETAR, Nov 12 — Six temporary relief centres (PPS) have been opened in Kedah to house 239 people from the Kulim and Bandar Baharu districts affected by flash floods following heavy rain for two hours yesterday evening.

Kedah Civil Defence Force Disaster Management Committee secretariat head Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said all the victims were from 61 families.

"Five PPS have been opened in Kulim, namely at Surau Taman Sang Kancil, which houses 93 people from 25 families, Masjid Sungai Seluang (91 people from 21 families) and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Limau (27 people from eight families).

"Fourteen victims from four families are taking shelter at SK Permatang Tok Dik, while six people from one family at Dewan Penghulu Paya Tok Betok,” he said in a statement here today.

He said the areas affected in the district are Kampung Sungai Seluang in Mukim Sungai Seluang, Surau Taman Sang Kancil in Mukim Lunas, Kampung Paya Tok Betok in Mukim Sungai Ular and Kampung Bukit Sarang Ayam in Mukim Padang Cina.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Suhaimi said one PPS has been opened in the Bandar Baharu district, namely at Surau Batu 18, which houses eight people from two families.

"Heavy rain yesterday evening has resulted in some areas being flooded, and all the victims have been evacuated to PPS to avoid any untoward incident,” he said. — Bernama
