KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Umno should be the party asked about its leader Khairy Jamaluddin’s declaration of his plans to one day become prime minister, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Anwar also suggested that this was different from his own situation, where Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties had already declared their support for himself to be the coalition’s prime minister candidate if the coalition wins the 15th general election (GE15).
"Ask Umno lah, Umno did not declare. I didn’t declare myself for PM because I want to. I declared after parties supported me,” he told reporters briefly when met after an anti-corruption dialogue here.
Last night, Khairy said he was ready to be prime minister, but he was willing to wait for his turn as he is still 46 years old.
Khairy said he wanted to prove himself by winning the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat first in GE15, before adding that he still supported Barisan Nasional’s (BN) touted ‘poster boy’ Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be the next prime minister if BN wins GE15.
Caretaker prime minister and Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri is BN’s ‘poster boy’ for this election.
Coalition leaders have said that he will return as head of government if BN wins the election.
Since Nomination Day last Saturday, PH leaders have been pushing the idea that a vote for Khairy in the Sungai Buloh seat would translate into a vote for BN chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Khairy has been seeking to counter that idea.
