REMBAU, Nov 5 ― The Rembau parliamentary seat will see a five-cornered contest in the 15th general election (GE15).

The candidates are Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus from Perikatan Nasional (PN), Barisan Nasional's (BN) Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Jufitri Joha, Tinagaran Subramaniam from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and Datuk Ramly Awaluddin from Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), said returning officer Mohamad Najib Mustafa today.

"I have checked and I'm satisfied with the nomination forms submitted. I hereby announce the candidates who will contest in the P131 Rembau seat,” said Najib.

The Rembau parliamentary seat will see a different defender from BN this time after three-term incumbent Khairy Jamaluddin was fielded in Sungai Buloh for the GE15.

In September, the caretaker health minister was told to make way for Umno deputy president Mohamad, who had then hinted that he wanted to contest at a parliamentary constituency in the GE15.

Khairy at the time said he had no objections and would adhere to the orders from the party's top leadership with Mohamad being Rembau Umno division chief.

This will be Mohamad's first contest for a parliamentary seat.

Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination papers, PH candidate Jufitri said his tour of Rembau has shown him there were many outstanding socio-econimic issues that needed immediate attention.

Among others, Rembau folks have voiced their requests for job opportunities and housing.

"The most requested basic needs from Rembau residents are job opportunities, housing, digital economy and immediate problem solving.

"Those are some of the things I see when I go to the ground,” he said.

Asked his views on the other candidates, in particular Mohamad, Jufitri who was formerly a president of the Malaysian Youth Council, confidently said he has enough experience to take on the BN giant.

"As a former youth leader, I have experience and networking and I have done community work here for the past 20 years since my parents shifted back here.

"I’m very enthusiastic as the rakyat has given good feedback for a young candidate who not only has experience in Rembau but also at the national level and international level,” he said.

"So let’s just change from KJ to JJ,” he added, referring to the previous Rembau MP Khairy and pointing to his own initials.
