"The support I received today is heartening but I must continue working hard. I cannot view this as an easy win as the maturity of voters today is very high and they want to see a candidate who is truly able to create a government that is clean, strong and attentive to the people’s needs,” he told reporters filing his nomination.

He added that Gombak has become one of the fastest developing constituencies and that he is confident he has served the area by providing it with many opportunities and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said it would be a challenge ahead of him to win the Gombak seat as two of his competitors were partners in the caretaker federal government and the win was not something that he should not "take for granted”.

"In the two years after Azmin left PH, I have taken over the task of listening to the views of the people of Gombak and doing my best to solve the local issues,” Amirudin told reporters after the ceremony, subtly alluding to the so-called "Sheraton move”.

Jamaludin, who is from Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), was the earliest to arrive this morning, followed by Ir Zulkifli, Amirudin, Azmin and Megat.

The announcement that Azmin will be contesting was booed by the gathered PH supporters, while the announcement of Amirudin’s candidacy was booed by the crowd of PN supporters.

On the other hand, the candidacy of Ir Zulkifli was greeted by raucous cheers from all camps, something that he was visibly surprised by.

The PN supporters, who gathered in full force, were chanting "Gombak juara” (Gombak champion) in support of Azmin, while the PH supporters chanted "reformasi” (reformation) and the BN supporters sang songs.
