KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — All MPs have until 4pm tomorrow to submit in writing to Istana Negara their candidate for the next prime minister.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun issued a notice this morning instructing the MPs to do so, following a decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Azhar in the letter said this is in accordance with Article 43 (2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.
In carrying out the order of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, I am issuing a notice to have you submit a declaration which clearly and distinctly states one MP whom you believe can be the 9th Prime Minister,” he said in a letter that was shared on social media.
This letter has been confirmed by the Speaker’s Office.
"The lawmaker’s declaration must be submitted to the Istana Negara no later than Wednesday, August 18 before 4pm, to Colonel Datuk Nazim Mohd Alim, Senior Private Secretary to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” Azhar said.
He added that hand submissions are not permitted as Istana Negara is still under Phase One of the National Recovery Plan, as well as to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
In the letter, Azhar said the MP’s declaration must include the following details:
- Adequate identification of the MP making the nomination
- Adequate identification of only one MP entrusted by the lawmaker
- Clear, explicit and unconditional statement of trust
- The nominating MP’s signature
- Signature and official stamp of a witness, whether an advocate and solicitor, commissioner of oaths, public notary or an equivalent position for the MP who is abroad
- Date of declaration letter
Azhar warned that any declaration letter that does not follow the listed details or is submitted late will not be given consideration.
He also reminded the MPs to maintain confidentiality of their respective choices until the King makes a decision on the matter.
Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto confirmed receiving the notice.
"Yes we have received the letter from the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat on naming a candidate as Malaysia’s 9th PM.
"As the letter clearly indicates, our reply must be made to the Palace,” she told Malay Mail.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as Malaysia’s 8th prime minister yesterday and was later appointed in a caretaker position until a suitable candidate for the job can be determined.
