KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that his party Umno is requesting for both Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and de facto law minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to resign.
He also reiterated that its MPs have rescinded their support for Muhyiddin to lead the government, following the statement by Istana Negara denying that the Agong had assented to revoke the Emergency Ordinances as claimed by the government.
"This move is a form of treason to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and is a breach of the Constitution.
"Therefore, Umno asks Muhyiddin and Takiyuddin to relinquish their positions with dignity,” the Umno president said in a statement.
Ahmad Zahid said that Umno MPs must express and execute the party’s supreme council decision on July 7, to withdraw support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.
"This decision is to fulfil the oath of office as a Member of Parliament who must pay allegiance to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and preserve, protect and defend the Federal Constitution at all times,” he added.
Ahmad Zahid said that the stand is also in line with the principles and objectives of Umno to constantly maintain and defend the institution of the Malay Rulers as stipulated in Clause 3 of the party’s constitution.
Earlier today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong expressed his deep disappointment at Takiyuddin’s assertion in Parliament on Monday that the Emergency Ordinances have been revoked,
The Agong, via a statement from the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, said that Takiyuddin’s announcement in Parliament was consequently premature and inaccurate.
The palace statement resulted in an uproar inside the Dewan Rakyat earlier today.
The current Emergency has been in effect since January 11 and is set to end on August 1, with the Emergency (Essential Powers) (Amendment) Ordinance (EO) 2021 gazetted three days later.
Among the more controversial regulations within the EO include free reign afforded to the government to spend from the country’s coffers as they please without obtaining Parliament’s approval.
Also included within the EO are provisions allowing individuals to be compounded up to RM10,000 for breaching movement control order regulations, and also the hard stance and potential RM500,000 fine liable against those found guilty of circulating unverified information or "fake news”.
