New record high of 15,902 Covid-19 infections pushes Malaysia to brink of a million cases

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Malaysia registered a second consecutive day of record-high Covid-19 numbers today, surpassing yesterday’s unprecedented 15,573 cases.

According to health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the number of new Covid-19 infections detected over the last 24 hours was 15,902, giving Malaysia a cumulative total of 996,393 since the pandemic began.

"Selangor reported 7,351 cases while Kuala Lumpur still remained high at 2,406 cases,” he said in a post on Twitter. 

Other states which recorded close to 1,000 cases are Kedah (869), Johor (804) and Sabah (712).

The remaining states in the country recorded below 700 cases with Putrajaya (59), Labuan (30),  and Perlis (seven) recording a low number of infections.

From the cumulative cases of 996,393, a total of 9,471 patients made a recovery, while 950 are currently being treated in intensive care units, 468 in need of breathing aids.

As for updates on new infection clusters, the Health Ministry today detected 27 new clusters, bringing the cumulative active clusters to 976.

"The cumulative number of clusters is now at 3,418 where 2,442 have ended the infection period,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

From the 27 new clusters, 15 were detected among workplaces (Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah, Perak, Pahang and Melaka), seven from among the communities (Selangor, Pahang, Sabah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang), two detention centres in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, one education cluster, high risk and imported.
