Covid-19: Malaysia’s new cases fall but still over 5,000

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Some 5,218 new confirmed Covid-19 infections were detected in the country over the last 24 hours, making it the sixth day straight the figure has stayed above 5,000.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah revealed that the highest number of infections came from Selangor with 1,989 new cases, followed by 629 in Negri Sembilan and 469 new infections in Kuala Lumpur.

Today’s figure brought the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases detected locally to 739,266, on a day many had assumed would be the last day of the full lockdown under the National Recovery Plan.

Dr Noor Hisham’s statement later revealed that seven of today’s new cases were imported, with the rest involving 4,121 locals and 1,090 non-Malaysians infected locally.

His statement also noted that 4,744 more patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, bringing the total recovery rate to 91 per cent with 672,453 individuals recovered.

The director-general said 22 new Covid-19 clusters discovered over the last day, 16 of which were detected in workplaces across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Sarawak, Kedah and Kelantan, and the remaining six through community infections.

He said in total there has been 2,794 clusters detected locally, 880 of which still remain active and 1,914 declared ended.

Additionally, he also revealed 57 more Covid-19 related deaths reported over the last day, which brought the nationwide death count to 5,001, with a 0.68 per cent fatality rate.
