In past 24 hours, Covid-19 infected 2,764 people in Malaysia, killed 13 others

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — The number of new Covid-19 infections in Malaysia dipped below 3,000 for the first time since the movement control order (MCO) returned, registering 2,764 cases.

The last time was on January 13, when the Health Ministry recorded 2,985 new cases.

However, the number of people in the country who have died from the coronavirus remains in the double digits — at 13 today, raising the overall fatality to 909.

The number of recoveries also exceeded the infection cases today, with 3,887 being discharged from hospitals.

Selangor still leads as the state with the most cases recorded in the past 24 hours, at 862, followed by Johor (521) and Kuala Lumpur (422) while Perlis, which is classified as a green zone, recorded no cases.

Out of 862 cases in Selangor, 668 were from active clusters and active contact tracing conducted in the field.

Today’s fatalities involved six cases in Selangor, one in Kuala Lumpur and two each in Sabah, Sarawak and Johor.

From the fatalities today, only one of the deceased, a 74-year-old man, who was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, had no known record of any prior chronic illness.

Malaysia still has 50,841 active Covid-19 cases, with 289 cases currently being treated in intensive care, of which 127 require breathing aid.

To date, the country has recorded 248,316 Covid-19 cases and 196,566 recoveries in total.
