KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 ― Former attorney general (AG) Tan Sri Tommy Thomas has declined to comment on the conviction of Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the SRC International trial, a case which he oversaw in his previous capacity.

"It is not proper for me to comment so I’m declining to comment.

"It’s not nice. I’ve resigned and that’s it. I’m history,” Thomas told Malay Mail when contacted.

On March 4, the former AG had said the reason that he resigned from office mere months before the end of his two-year contract in June was due to the change of government.

At the time, it was reported that Thomas had chosen to step down because the person who had appointed him, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had tendered his resignation — a decision that, Thomas said, is in line with the tradition seen in the United Kingdom and other mature democracies.

During his career as AG, Thomas handled trials involving Najib, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor.

From the start, Thomas’ role as AG was challenged by Umno, PAS and Malay NGOs who were uncomfortable with his appointment.

After stepping down, Thomas said he wanted to take a break but remained grateful to Dr Mahathir for giving him the privilege of serving Malaysia.
