KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 ― Retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram set up his own law firm last November, his office confirmed today.

Sri Ram, 71, made headlines on October 28 last year when he unexpectedly showed up as the lead counsel for federal opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against a sodomy conviction.

Earlier today, news portal The Malaysian Insider reported that Soo Thien Ming & Nashrah, the previous law firm where Sri Ram was attached to as a consultant, had pressured him to leave while he was acting for Anwar in the Federal Court.

At the time of writing, Malay Mail Online was unable to verify The Malaysian Insider report, with Sri Ram yet to respond to email requests for clarification as he is currently overseas.

Anwar’s appeal at the apex court against his sodomy conviction and five-year jail sentence ran from October 28 until November 7 last year. The date for the Federal Court decision has yet to be fixed.

A check today with Soo Thien Ming & Nashrah showed that Sri Ram had already left the firm, but staff declined having knowledge of the reason behind the former judge’s exit.

A check on the Malaysian Bar's online legal directory listed Sri Ram as being attached to the firm Sri Ram.
