Dire situation of Komtar carpark
The car park in Komtar is often empty as many are uncomfortable with the dilipidated condition.

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 21 — Penang’s iconic skyscraper Komtar is undergoing a RM50 million makeover to breathe new life into the 65-storey tower.

However, it remains to be seen whether its multi-level carpark will receive a much-needed facelift under the revitalisation project.

The Hotline Roving Team visited the multi-storey carpark recently following grouses from locals and discovered the area to be “dingy” with rough cement floors and walls that have been vandalised.

To make matters worse, the RM3 charge per entry is considered “hefty” considering the carpark lacks security features and patrol guards.

Although there are two closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at both ends of each floor, there are several “blind spots” which may put users, especially female drivers, at risk.

Regular patron Sharon says it is time those in charge looked into the dilapidated condition of the carpark.

The 31-year-old promoter says she has no choice as other parking areas are too far away from her workplace.

“The charges would be acceptable if the condition of the carpark was better,” said Sharon, adding the place will be swamped with water if there is a downpour.

Another visitor, who requested anonymity, says he is ashamed of the condition of the carpark.

“Apparently, there are nine floors of carpark space but the entrance to the sixth level has been sealed off.

The stairway to the Komtar multi-storey carpark is quiet and could pose a risk to the public.

“What would tourists think when they flock to this place once the RM50 million upgrade is completed?

“I’d rather park my car in First Avenue or Prangin Mall and walk to Komtar instead.”

The Penang Development Corporation (PDC) which manages the complex says it is unable to upgrade the parking lot as it is in a legal tussle with Tropiland Sdn Bhd, the tenant of the carpark.

Its deputy general manager (I) Iskandar Basha Abdul Kadir confirms the legal case is ongoing.

“It is best for us to reserve our comment until the legal dispute is settled,” said Iskandar.

Only World Group Holdings Bhd, which is tasked to revitalise the Komtar tower, says the company will only be undertaking projects which are listed in the contract.

A spokesman from the company says the facelift will include construction of a banquet hall on Level Five as well as the construction of two external high-speed observation bubble elevators.

Levels 59 and 60 as well as 64 and 65 will be refurbished into international-class sky dining restaurants including an outdoor dining area.

Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng says he had raise the matter during a committee meeting with the Northeast district office.

“We may have to bring Penang Island Municipal Council into the picture as the carpark management has not been cooperative.”

He says the council could also issue a summons to the car park management for leaving it in a dilapidated condition.
