KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 —What he lacks in fancy equipment, he makes up for in creativity.

That’s how Mohamad Azwan Jamaluddin found himself in the wedding industry as a highly-sought after wedding videographer armed with only two iPhones.

Based in Kepala Batas, Penang, the 27-year-old began dabbling in videography last year by making free wedding videos for his siblings and cousins, reported mStar.

Soon after, non-family members began approaching him and before he knew it, he had a steady side hustle that gave him extra money.

"When I shared my videos on TikTok, I started doing real work and got more customers,” said Azwan, better known as Wan.

Without any formal training or previous experience, each gig gave the self-taught mobile videographer the confidence to hone his skills.

Wan, whose other job is selling clothes on TikTok, works as a wedding videographer only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Using an iPhone 11 and iPhone 13 Pro Max, he charges RM200 for an indoor video, RM200 for an outdoor video and RM350 for both.

"So far nobody’s upset that I charge so low but that’s the market rate of using a phone,” said Wan, who’s fully booked until May next year.

"If you use a camera, the rates are different, you get what you pay for.”

While he gets compliments for his work, there are those who look down on him for using just a phone.

Some have told him it’s embarrassing and unprofessional to use only a phone and want him to upgrade to a camera.

"But if I do that, I have to charge more and customers can’t enjoy my low rates,” said the father of one.

"I don’t take criticism personally, I can handle it. Some have also told me to improve my video quality, which is constructive criticism I appreciate.”

In any case, Wan has thousands of followers on TikTok who like his creative low-budget videos and seem to agree that you don’t need expensive equipment to get a decent video.

"A good video or photo is not just dependent on the camera or the phone,” said a TikTok user. "The person handling it plays a big role too.”

"You can use the most expensive cameras but if you don’t have the skills, nothing will come of it,” said another.

"If he’s got the talent, he can use whatever he wants and still produce the best work,” said a third.
