KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Over thousands of people gathered at Aeon Mall Bukit Tinggi yesterday (June 3) to witness a history-making moment when Malaysia broke the Guinness World Records title of largest gathering in Spider-Man costume.
The event was organised by Sony Pictures Malaysia and Aeon Mall in celebration of the release of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse which was released on June 1.
The attempt started at 4pm at the shopping mall’s centre court where people dressed as Spider-Man gathered at the designated attempt area.
The official Guinness World Record adjudicator Kazuyoshi then announced the start of the attempt, and all those dressed as Spider-Man were required to remain in the attempt area for at least five minutes.
At 4.40pm, Kazuyoshi announced that Malaysia had successfully set a new world record of largest gathering in Spider-Man costume with a total of 685 participants.
The previous record of the largest gathering of people dressed as Spider-Man was 601 and was achieved by Sony Pictures Entertainment (India) on December 15, 2021.
The event ended with a certificate presentation from Guinness World Records to Sony Pictures Malaysia managing director Simon Foo and Aeon chief property officer Lee Beng Beng.
With a high 96 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has received great reviews since its worldwide opening on June 1. The film currently has the biggest animation opening day post pandemic.
