KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — A senior dog that was reunited with its owner in February after going missing for seven years has died.

Taking to her social media, Jessie Springer shared that her 16-year-old Jack Russel-Pug mix called Nugget had passed away, 10 Tampa Bay reported.

Nugget was found by the roadside in northern South Carolina on February 9 where a microchip revealed his actual home was some 3,000km away in New Mexico.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to let everyone know that Nugget went home to be with the Lord today at 12.30pm,” she wrote in the post, adding that she was grateful that Nugget was able to spend his last several weeks with her.

Springer thanked the woman who rescued Nugget and credited Carolina Loving Hound Rescue for reuniting her with her dog.

"So please, if I could ask anything of anyone, please, in remembrance of Nugget, please donate to Carolina Loving Hound Rescue because they made it possible to get him back home,” Springer added.

Springer also encouraged pet owners to microchip their pets in case they go missing.

It is unclear how Nugget ended up in South Carolina.
