KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — A coffeeshop in Penang that earned the ire of social media users over its post shaming a customer who refused to order drinks, has denied it will be shuttering.

The proprietor of Seng Thor Coffee Shop, who identified himself as Mr Lim, told Sin Chew Daily that a Facebook account bearing the shop's name announcing their impending closure was fake.

As such, he would be lodging a police report over the matter.

Lim said he had closed down the shop's Facebook page on Monday after a post shaming a customer for refusing to order a drink, drew angry reactions.

"I closed the page to avoid social media users from continuing commenting or putting unrelated pictures,” he reportedly said, adding that he was alerted of the Facebook account by family and friends this morning.

On the controversial post, Lim said he had apologised to the customer and also social media users prior to closing down the Facebook page.

He also denied that he created the controversy to 'promote' his shop.

"We have been in operation for 71 years where our customers are mostly regulars and tourists. Hence, we do not need to stoop so low,” he reportedly said.
