KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — India’s first biological transgender parents Ziya Paval and Zahhad have finally named their newborn baby girl.

Naming a baby is considered to be sacred and an important part of Indian culture so it comes as no surprise that they chose to wait and do it on International Women’s Day (March 8).

The adorable baby girl, born last month, was named Zabiya Zahhad in a glittering ceremony attended by family, friends and well-wishers.

Zabiya means gazelle in Arabic.

Visibly excited at the celebration decorated with butterflies and balloons, the Kerala-based parents said they wished their baby would spread light in society in an interview with NDTV.

Asked about the earlier announcement that they did not want to disclose the gender of the child, Ziya said they were waiting for the right occasion to reveal it to the world.

Referring to the female name given to the baby, Ziya, a transgender woman born a male, said: "Now it is clear to everyone.

"We really wanted our baby’s birth to be known to all. I am so happy that my wish has been fulfilled. This function was my dream.”

Her partner, Zahhad, who had delivered the child at a government medical college hospital in Kozhikode via C-section, said they are planning to travel with the baby but only after six months.

"For the next six months, it’s complete rest for us,” added Zahhad, who goes by one name.

The couple had approached the hospital authorities demanding to register their new gender identity in the birth certificate of their newborn.

Though Zahhad, a transgender man born a female, had delivered the child, he wanted his name to be registered as the father of the baby and Ziya as the mother.
