In Taiwan, employees heap criticism on companies that scaled down on their year-end banquets

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — With Chinese New Year around the corner, companies are having year-end banquets to treat their employees for their hard work over the past year.

However, a banquet hosted by a company in Taiwan drew brickbats instead when an employee complained about the way it was organised.

Taking to Taiwan's online social media and networking platform Dcard, the employee complained that his company's banquet was sponsored by their customers, TVBS reported.

According to the employee, his company had held a hot pot dinner where all the materials were gifts from their customers.

"My company just bought cabbage, corn and several boxes of sliced meat,” he shared, adding that it would have been better if the company organised the meal outside.

"I am speechless,” he ended the post.

Responding to the matter, a social media user commented that he should appreciate his company's effort.

Citing her own experience, the user said to save on having the banquet, her company management proposed they go off for two months.

"After that proposal, all of us decided to leave the company, which had since closed down.”

Another user said as their employer is a vegetarian, they were served vegetarian meal during the banquet.

In related news, Taiwan News reported that glutinous rice cooked with shrimp and crab served during year-end banquets is the most hated dish.

Other dishes like appetiser made from jellyfish and mullet roe, steamed fish, Buddha jumping over the wall, silky black chicken and braised pig knuckle also made it to the hated dish list.
