OsteoCare — Where pain and sports injuries are things of the past

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — Fast gaining momentum in Malaysia, Oriental Tit Tar treatment by OsteoCare headed by founder, principle physician and managing director, Erik Leong Yann Khuan has already seen the setting up of four centres to attend to a growing number of people who seek pain relief in joints and muscles. They are probably caused from injuries sustained from sports and work-related activities.

What makes OsteoCare standout amongst traditional Chinese medicine and western chiropractic lies in the fact that Leong employs techniques of chiropractic incorporated with Oriental Tit Tar to set bones, joints and muscles in place.

Tit Tar (fall and hit in Chinese) is a traditional Chinese treatment for injuries, said to have originated in 200 BC practised by Master Wah Toh in the province of Canton, China. It is closely associated with Chinese martial arts where injuries are common and quick healings restored. It also developed further when its use became a necessity at ancient Chinese battlefields where fast healing is brought about by Tit Tar and herbs. Tit Tar is one area of traditional Chinese medicine that deals with physical trauma.

The unique and natural method of putting straight a dislocation or a broken bone using Tit Tar continues till today by practitioners who still maintain the age-old method.

Interestingly, Tit Tar involves the manual setting or adjustment of the bone, joint and muscle that requires realignment caused by any kind of injuries that could range from simple sprains to complex fractures. It is said that any pain experienced by our body is related to some form of misalignment of a particular bone, joint or muscle and this can be set right by realigning the affected part with Oriental Tit Tar that only requires the use of a highly trained physician’s hands. Tit Tar does not involve any invasive methods of treatment; neither does it involve the use of needles (acupuncture) or cupping. In fact it is an amazingly painless method of treatment that one would welcome as compared to the otherwise involvement of surgery or sophisticated machines or even oral medications like painkillers and antibiotics.

Leong says that most of the problem cases that reach their centres range from sports injuries to day-to-day stress and tension derived from over-work that causes all kinds of body discomfort, pain and strain. Some of them succumb to injuries due to accidents and falls. Sports injuries are quite common among the people who visit Leong for treatment. According to him, some of the recently-held SEA games’ athletes have come to see him, either to "tune up” their body muscles and joints prior to their participation at the event or just after it, because of some injuries or bone dislocation.

Leong treats a wide range of injuries using Oriental Tit Tar and these include sports injuries such as tennis elbow, whiplash, ligament or muscle tear, bone or joint fractures, twisted ankle; and golf injuries like sprained back or golfer’s elbow. Besides sports injuries others include automobile accidents that see rib fractures, internal injuries, hairline fractures and broken bones while work related and domestic injuries include lifting heavy objects, entrapment of the neck nerves, posture problems and frozen shoulder. Most of the cases involve the dislocation of joints, ankle, elbow and knee and bone alignment problems while a number of cases also include shoulder, elbow and wrist pains; back, leg and neck pains; aches, strains, muscle pulls, stiffness and more. All these are "corrected” with the trained hands of Oriental Tit Tar practitioners at OsteoCare.

Tit Tar treatment procedures involve first, the test movement to determine the location of an injury and after confirming the "troubled spot” an application of a concoction of 42 Chinese herbs formed into cold packs and stored in the refrigerator are used at the affected area of the body to ease and improve blood circulation that warms the body temperature that consequently reduces muscle stiffness. Immediately after this procedure, Shiatsu (finger pressure) is applied to certain parts of the body "to block” circulation of blood at the inured spot making it numb so that the person does not experience any pain. Then, the main procedure takes place which is manual adjustment performed using the hands to realign the troubled spot without any pain being experienced. After this stage, another test movement is done to determine and ensure that improvement has taken place. Following this setting and adjustment procedure, another pack of Chinese traditional concoction consisting of 44 different types of herbs that is fried and made into hot packs and stored is applied at this stage on the same part of the body where "correction” has taken place to reduce any form of swellings that may occur following the manual adjustment and to help set the bone cartilage and strengthen the bone to the joint part. In serious injury cases, X-rays are done to pinpoint the exact spot of a dislocation or misalignment of a jont.

Leong was first exposed to Oriental Tit Tar practice when assisting his parents treating patients. In 1985 he continued his education under Master Tan Pak, a red army military doctor who was an expert at bone and joint setting. Armed with all the knowledge required of in this ancient art of healing, Leong went further to strengthen his foundation by taking up biomechanics and human movement at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia which empowered him into combining modern human science theory and traditional eastern techniques for treatments.

OsteoCare practises the conventional modern chiropractic treatment incorporating the ancient Oriental Tit Tar speed healing techniques in their treatments. Counselling is also a big part of Leong’s job at OsteoCare in this Oriental chiropractic treatment where advice is given on the type of diet and lifestyle changes that have to be made so as to prevent the recurrence of the same injury.

Leong has an ongoing vision of promoting OsteoCare to as many Malaysians as possible. It is his hope that Malaysians will come to know that there is always a solution to any pain that one may experience and that a simple but trained setting of the bones on the affected spot is possible, painless and practical. He hopes to be the solution provider in the country for bone, joint and muscle treatment and to be available at hand especially in strategic locations around the country. His vision has begun to take shape with the opening of his Bangsar Village II OsteoCare and the PJ outlet, two strategic locations to become accessible for people who seek his therapeutic assistance. He is already looking at opening a number of OsteoCare outlets around the country. Leong advocates professionalism and quality service. His Oriental Tit Tar incorporated treatment methodology is not only holistic, natural and painless but interestingly the western techniques integrating into eastern techniques help to improve the effectiveness in treating injuries. At the centres, all his 10 physicians and therapists are well- trained, knowledgeable and experienced in Oriental chiropractic and Tit Tar treatment and therapy. OsteoCare with Leong at the helm enjoys rewarding moments as the people they treat, write back to say how much better their lives become after treatment.
