PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — The long-awaited Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line is ready to begin operations by the end of this month, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke saying the official launch date will be announced within the next two weeks.

Speaking to reporters after the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Road Safety Council (MKJR) today, Loke said trial operations for the line have gone smoothly and the system is prepared for passenger service.

“LRT3 is expected to open by the end of this month. The specific date will be announced within the next two weeks.

“Trial operations have gone well and the system is ready. We expect it to begin operations before the end of the month,” he said.

Dubbed the Shah Alam line, LRT3 was supposed to launch last year; however, due to outstanding system stability and software issues identified during the testing and commissioning (T&C) phase, the operations did not commence.

The LRT3 is a 37.8-kilometre light-rail transit project connecting Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya/Damansara to Johan Setia in Klang.

The line traverses western Klang Valley, providing rail access to densely populated and rapidly developing areas, including Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said several key principles have been agreed upon by all parties involved in the Bukit Kiara longhouse resettlement and redevelopment project.

Among the key terms, she said residents of the longhouse will receive replacement housing as previously promised, while development at the site will be strictly limited to 2.33 hectares.

“The remaining land will be returned to the government to be gazetted as public open space.

“The replacement housing will be constructed and completed first before residents are relocated. This means the new housing blocks will be built ahead of time, allowing residents to move directly into their new homes,” she told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony for permanent housing for Bukit Kiara longhouse residents here today.

Yeoh said demolition of the existing longhouse will only take place after relocation has been completed, to make way for further development.

She added that the existing temple site will also be preserved and officially designated as a non-Muslim place of worship, with RM100,000 allocated for its upkeep.

Parking capacity at Taman Rimba Kiara will also be increased from 80 to 150 bays under the scheme.

On the original agreement with the developer, Yeoh said the first housing lot is provided free of charge, while the second lot was initially to be offered to 98 families at a cost of RM175,000.

However, following prolonged court proceedings and given that the families fall under the B40 income group, the government has agreed, after discussions with all parties, that the second unit will also be provided free of charge.

The project, which involves 98 families, is expected to be completed within three years.

Yeoh added that once residents move into their new homes, maintenance charges will apply but will be subsidised through a RM1 million government grant channelled via DBKL over three years.

She said this will help ease the financial burden during the transition period.

She noted that the dispute has lasted more than 44 years, originating from the excision of Taman Rimba Kiara land for development, which led to prolonged legal and policy disputes.

In response, a special task force has been established under the Federal Territories Department to protect and gazette green spaces, ensuring that similar disputes involving public parks and developers do not recur.

“This initiative aims to safeguard more green areas moving forward, in line with ongoing government efforts to protect urban public spaces,” she said.

KOTA KINABALU, June 15 — Investigators have yet to identify any suspects in the gruesome killing of a Bornean elephant found decapitated in Tongod last month, with Sabah authorities saying the remote location of the crime and lack of evidence continue to hamper efforts to solve the case.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the investigation is still ongoing and authorities are waiting for it to be completed before drawing any conclusions.

“The case is still under investigation and we are waiting for it to be completed,” he said when asked for an update on the probe here today.

Jafry acknowledged the challenges faced by enforcement agencies, noting that Sabah's vast forested areas make wildlife monitoring a difficult task.

“So far, no one has come forward. We have to depend on the staff, but this is a very large area to cover and we also have many places to monitor. We hope people understand, but we will definitely take action,” he said.

He added that no arrests have been made so far due to the lack of evidence linking any individual to the crime and the difficulty in finding witnesses.

The adult male Bornean elephant was found dead in the Sungai Pinangah Forest Reserve in Tongod on May 17, with its face hacked open in an L-shaped pattern and both tusks missing.

Previously Jafry had said the incident happened in remote and isolated jungle areas where eye witnesses were unlikely.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar had however said that estate workers, operators or local communities were cooperative but the issue was getting evidence to charge any suspects.

The killing was most likely an act of poaching for its ivory.

The Borneon elephant is the smallest of the elephant species and those in Sabah are its own unique species and one of the icons of Sabah’s wildlife heritage.

However, the state struggles with a declining population due to habitat loss, poaching, general hunting and general human wildlife conflict.

There is an estimated 1,000 elephants remaining in Sabah, and every single loss is considered significant.

SHAH ALAM, June 15 — A total of 50,000 low-income families in Selangor will receive cash aid of RM100 a month for six months under the Kita Selangor Voucher initiative, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced today.

He said the initiative, which will begin on June 30, is part of the RM140 million Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 unveiled on April 16 to help residents cope with global economic uncertainty, rising living costs and the impact of the global supply crisis.

Recipients will be identified through existing databases, including the Selangor Well-being Life Assistance Initiative (Bingkas) and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), to ensure the assistance reaches those who need it most.

“We will begin reviewing the list of recipients on June 22 and 23 before notifying those who qualify.

“Our target is for recipients to start receiving the RM100 monthly assistance from June 30, with payments continuing for six months,” he said after launching the package at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) at the Selangor State Secretariat building here.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said an additional RM5 million had been allocated for the 2026 Jelajah Ehsan Rahmah (JER) programme through the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS), bringing the total allocation to RM10 million, with the programme set to be held twice in each state constituency from this month.

To encourage greater use of public transportation and reduce dependence on conventional fuels, he said the state government would also offer a RM30 monthly public transport subsidy to 50,000 users through the Nine application.

“The subsidy, which takes effect today, can be used for the state’s demand-responsive transit (DRT) van network for six months. It will also be expanded to other public transport modes, including the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and KTM Komuter services, in the next phase,” he said.

Amirudin said the state government would also implement a free breakfast programme for 120,000 students in need at 965 schools under the Selangor Education Department and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department to help ease parents’ financial burden.

Meanwhile, he said Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package, which will focus on protecting the state’s industrial sector, would be tabled at a special State Legislative Assembly sitting on June 19, 22 and 23.

He noted that the state government had announced during the April 28 sitting that it would introduce several initiatives to strengthen Selangor’s manufacturing and services subsectors to mitigate the impact of the global supply crisis, enhance industrial competitiveness and spur economic growth.

Amirudin also clarified that the special sitting would focus solely on discussing the resilience package and was unrelated to any dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — The government has approved RM1 million for residents involved in the Bukit Kiara longhouse resettlement and redevelopment project, with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) tasked to manage maintenance of the housing scheme, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

Anwar said the allocation is intended to ease the financial burden on residents after relocation and ensure the long-term upkeep of the housing area is properly managed.

“I have approved an allocation of RM1 million for the residents here.

“Later, DBKL will manage and oversee the maintenance arrangements so that monthly costs can be covered and residents are not burdened,” he said in his speech at the ground-breaking ceremony for permanent housing for Bukit Kiara longhouse residents here today.

He described the initiative as a strong example of how clear policy direction and committed leadership can deliver more equitable outcomes for the public.

Anwar also said the project should serve as a model to be shared nationwide once completed.

“For me, this is a positive example of what Malaysia can achieve. When policies are clear, leadership is committed, and there is awareness and understanding, we can build a new Malaysia that is fairer and ensures well-being for all,” he said.

“I hope those involved will be tasked after completion to go around the country and share what has been achieved here,” he added.

He said Malaysia must continue to pursue development guided by values, not profit alone, stressing the need to balance corporate interests with public welfare.

“Of course, companies should not be pushed into losses, but at the same time, profit cannot be the only consideration. The country cannot focus solely on maximising profit while ignoring the welfare of the people,” he said.

Anwar added that while businesses should continue to grow, reasonable adjustments to profit margins may be needed to ensure fairness for the public.

He said the government may step in with incentives where necessary as part of broader structural adjustments to ensure the arrangement benefits residents.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — The Selangor special state assembly sitting beginning Friday is not linked to the dissolution of the state assembly or any state election preparations, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said today.

Instead, Amirudin said the three-day sitting on June 19, 22 and 23 will focus on the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 2, aimed at reinforcing the state’s economic and social support measures, reported Harian Metro today.

“Yes, (it is focused on Phase 2)… it has nothing to do with the state election. There’s still a long way to go… no, it is not related.

“We are not like Johor. Johor announced RM170 million in aid ahead of the state polls. We do not even have elections, yet we are still providing assistance to the people,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after launching the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 at the Selangor State Economic Action Unit (MTES) meeting room in the state secretariat in Shah Alam today.

Amirudin said Phase 1 of the package, which began implementation this month, was developed through engagement sessions with experts in economics, industry, energy and geopolitics to assess the impact of global economic uncertainty.

He said the initiative is primarily aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures while strengthening food security and the state’s economic resilience.

“What I am announcing today is the implementation of the same package announced in April. This announcement is to set out the implementation mechanism and disbursement schedule for all initiatives under the package,” he said.

The Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 includes seven main initiatives such as the Kita Selangor voucher, public transport fare subsidies, free breakfast programme for students, Jelajah Ehsan Rahmah, agricultural sector assistance, Selangor Rumpun sales programme and the establishment of the Selangor Food Bank.

SHAH ALAM, June 15 — Selangor’s financial position is still at a healthy level despite the global economic uncertainties following the supply crisis and fluctuations in world markets.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government did not see the need to take emergency measures because revenue collection remains on a positive track.

State revenue collection reached RM1.6 billion as of May against this year’s RM2.8 billion target, with the current collection trend showing positive development.

“We have not yet pressed the ‘panic button’, but are monitoring weekly and monthly developments,” he said at a press conference after launching the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 at the Selangor State Secretary’s Office (SUK) Building here today.

Amirudin added that Selangor also recorded a RM300 million surplus against total expenditure due to the state government’s savings.

Although this year’s financial position is not as strong as last year’s, the state government is confident of achieving the set revenue target, and it still has good reserve collection, he said.

“At the same time, various efforts are being made, including through the land disposal process, changes to the actual conditions of land for industrial purposes and the influx of new investments into Selangor,” he said.

Amirudin said the real impact of global economic uncertainty is expected to be seen in the next few months, and the state government is taking a proactive approach to reduce its impact on the people and the economic sector. — Bernama

KOTA BHARU, June 15 — Kelantan police have called in more than 10 courier service companies operating in the state to share information on the latest modus operandi employed by drug syndicates, which have been found using parcel delivery channels to facilitate their activities.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the initiative was intended to heighten vigilance among courier companies and their employees after numerous drug cases were found to involve courier services.

He said courier firms had been asked to keep records of senders’ particulars, including details of their identity cards and phone numbers, to aid investigations should any offences arise.

"We have urged them to remain alert, and where a parcel raises suspicion, customers may be asked to open it before courier personnel for an initial check," he said after the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters monthly gathering here today.

Mohd Yusoff said courier companies had been informed of a new trend involving “drop-off” deliveries, in which parcels are registered online and left at designated collection points without direct contact between senders and staff.

According to him, the method complicates efforts to identify senders because fewer details are recorded compared with over-the-counter transactions.

Mohd Yusoff said there was no evidence to suggest that any courier company had been involved in drug smuggling, although some employees had been questioned in connection with ongoing investigations.

He also urged courier firms to consider using scanning devices in the future to help identify suspicious items in parcels and enhance delivery security measures. — Bernama

IPOH, June 15 — Showing restraint when dealing with Rohingya refugees who violate local laws and regulations should not be mistaken for a sign of weakness, but rather as an expression of compassion and humanity, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said.

Saarani said Rohingya refugees holding United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards are subject to international law and should be treated appropriately while residing in Malaysia.

“I welcome the reminder from the federal government that while taking action on these matters, there must also be room for humanitarian considerations.

“Because of that, sometimes people see us as weak. Actually, we are not weak; we are being humane,” he told a press conference after attending the ‘Meet Consumer Day’ programme at the Indera Mulia Stadium here.

He said the state government hoped the Rohingya community would understand and appreciate the humanitarian approach extended to them and refrain from violating local laws and regulations.

Saarani said some Rohingya refugees had become increasingly bold as their community grew larger, with some allegedly engaging in business activities despite regulations prohibiting them from doing so.

He added that some of these businesses were operating from premises owned by local citizens who preferred to rent out their shops rather than run businesses themselves.

“Many of these cases actually fall under the jurisdiction of local councils. When a business licence is issued to a local citizen, it cannot be transferred to another person, whether a local or a foreigner.

“Doing so is an offence, and the local authority has the power to revoke the business licence,” he said.

Saarani cited markets in Selayang and several areas in Perak, particularly Manjung, where he said some members of the Rohingya community appeared to have exceeded the boundaries set by state regulations.

“We cannot allow that,” he said.

He reminded the Rohingya community that the people of Perak were prepared to continue extending compassion and humanitarian support, but warned that such kindness should not be repaid with actions that could lead to riots, fights or violations of established rules.

Saarani also stressed that expelling Rohingya refugees was not a straightforward solution, as many had fled conflict and persecution in their homeland.

“In reality, they cannot simply be expelled. The question is, where would they be sent?

“If their country were peaceful and their homes and villages were safe and comfortable, they would not have come here in the first place,” he said.

He added that many Rohingya refugees who returned to their homeland found their homes destroyed and family members subjected to abuse, which was why Malaysians should continue to show sympathy and compassion towards them.

PETALING JAYA, June 15 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has called on academics, civil society activists, think tanks, legal practitioners and security experts to submit constructive proposals on refugee management in Malaysia, an issue he described as a longstanding legacy challenge.

“This is not a new issue. It is a legacy that has persisted across administrations. But the fact that it is a legacy has never been an excuse for the government to sit back or avoid taking action,” he said in a Facebook post.

Saifuddin stressed that the Madani government was committed to handling the matter responsibly, prudently and based on facts, with clear priorities — safeguarding national security while recognising humanitarian realities.

He noted that one of the biggest challenges was the absence of comprehensive and accurate data owned by the Malaysian government on individuals classified as refugees. To address this, the government is undertaking a more extensive process of data collection and biometric registration.

“We cannot manage what we do not know. We cannot protect national security without knowing precisely who is within our borders,” he said, adding that accurate data would enable more effective management of issues ranging from security and law enforcement to public health, employment and community welfare.

At the same time, Saifuddin emphasised that refugee status was not a licence to break Malaysian laws. “Any individual who commits a criminal offence or violates national laws will face enforcement action and due legal process,” he said.

He reiterated that the government would not shield offenders or compromise on national security. Instead, the aim was to strengthen Malaysia’s capacity to manage a reality that has long existed in the country.

“The goal is not to protect refugees, but to protect national interests, public safety and social order,” he said, adding that Malaysians should be able to discuss the issue “maturely, rationally and responsibly in the interest of the nation we all love”.

GEORGE TOWN, June 15 — Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) hopes to field more women candidates in the next state election, although identifying a sufficient number of suitable and willing candidates remains a challenge, said its chairman Chow Kon Yeow.

He said Penang PH remained committed to the target of achieving at least 30 per cent women’s participation in politics and decision-making, but continued to face difficulties finding enough suitable women willing to contest.

“That is certainly our aspiration. In every election, we will field women candidates, but the actual number will depend on whether there are enough suitable and willing candidates.

“While we aspire to have more women candidates, there must first be enough candidates for us to choose from. That is an issue we need to address,” he told reporters after officiating the World Women Economic and Business Summit 2026 here today.

Chow, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said that despite women making significant progress in sectors such as education, business, engineering and public service, their participation in politics continued to face distinct challenges.

Penang PH, he said, had been proactive in supporting the 30 per cent target, but relatively few women were willing to step forward during the candidate selection process due to the pressures and challenges associated with political participation.

Earlier in his officiating speech, Chow said Malaysia’s target of 30 per cent women’s representation in politics, introduced in 2009, had yet to be achieved, with women currently accounting for only 13.5 per cent of Members of Parliament and 12 per cent of state assemblypersons nationwide.

He said the gap called for renewed commitment and concrete action, adding that political parties should consider institutionalising the 30 per cent target in their candidate selection processes.

Chow said political parties should also ensure equal representation of women on decision-making committees and strengthen access to resources and mentoring for emerging women leaders. — Bernama

SERDANG, June 15 — Public institutions of higher learning (IPTAs) can no longer operate in silos or remain passive, but must instead serve as engines of national growth, centres of social reconciliation and dynamic problem-solvers for communities.

Higher Education director-general Datuk Prof Dr Azlinda Azman said IPTAs today cannot focus solely on academic achievements. Rather, every ringgit allocated to these institutions must be translated into tangible impact on national development and the global community.

“IPTAs must act as engines of national growth, centres of social reconciliation and dynamic problem-solvers for communities. Universities cannot focus solely on achievements that appear impressive on paper.

“Instead, every ringgit allocated to universities must be returned in the form of tangible impact on both the national and global landscape,” she said when speaking at the launch of Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Synergy Month 2026 programme here today.

She said the month-long programme, which runs throughout June, is a strategic initiative that reflects UPM’s commitment to strengthening the implementation of its university agenda in a holistic manner through the active participation of the entire campus community.

“UPM is sending a clear signal to industry, communities and the government that the discoveries and innovations emerging from the university are ready to be translated into solutions for global sustainability,” she said.

UPM Synergy Month 2026 serves as the university’s strategic platform to strengthen the implementation of its agenda in a holistic manner through the active participation of the entire campus community, while fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and togetherness in advancing initiatives that benefit society, industry and the country.

The programme is driven by five strategic focus areas: agriculture and food security, planetary health and sustainability, global prominence, community well-being, and Jiwa Putra (UPM’s volunteerism initiative involving its staff and students).

Meanwhile, UPM vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said that as a leading repository of knowledge anchored in agriculture and sustainability, the university carries a significant moral and academic responsibility.

“Universities can no longer remain mere observers or ivory towers that produce academic papers alone. Instead, they must serve as leaders, living laboratories and key drivers of solutions to these global crises in order to ensure a balance between human well-being and the natural environment,” he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said today he is likely to be charged in court over his Facebook post regarding the Rukun Negara, after police recorded an additional statement from him at Bukit Aman this morning.

Pua said he was called in for further questioning after the investigation papers were returned by the Attorney General’s Chambers to Bukit Aman for additional questions.

“I am fully prepared to defend my innocence, and more importantly, rigourously defend spirit of the Rukun Negara, and the sanctity of the Federal Constitution in Court of Law,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Pua said he attended the 11.30am meeting with his lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, and described the session with the police officers as courteous, cordial and professional.

He said the questioning lasted no more than 30 minutes, but noted that his latest statement classified him as a suspect, unlike his previous statement where he was interviewed as a witness.

“So it appears that the balance of probabilities have shifted, where I’m likely to be charged in Court within the next couple of weeks,” he added.

Pua said the additional questions mostly concerned the definition of the word “decree” and other matters linked to his Facebook post.

“My response was that the meaning of the post is per what I wrote, but I’ll be happy to provide additional elaboration if required, in Court,” he said.

Pua had previously been called by police over the Facebook post linked to the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution, after police reports were lodged against him.

In May, police said the case was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which concerns statements conducing to public mischief, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which covers improper use of network facilities or services.

KUCHING, June 15 — AirBorneo has clarified that it has not submitted an application for a direct Kuching-Bangkok service and that no such route has been formally confirmed at this stage.

The clarification comes following reports by Thailand’s The Nation that the Sarawak-owned airline had been allocated airport slots for a proposed Kuching-Suvarnabhumi route during the Winter 2026/2027 scheduling season.

In a statement issued to The Borneo Post, AirBorneo said while destinations across the region form part of its longer-term network planning, no application has been submitted for the recently mentioned Bangkok route.

“We appreciate and are thankful for the strong public interest in AirBorneo’s network expansion plans, and we can confirm that destinations across the region are part of our longer-term route planning.

“However, we wish to clarify that no application has been submitted for the recently mentioned Bangkok route at this stage, as nothing has been formally confirmed,” the airline said.

AirBorneo added that any future international service would be subject to the usual regulatory and approval processes before any announcement is made.

“As with any new international service, any future route would need to go through the standard regulatory and approval processes before it can be announced.

“We would caution against treating any specific route, frequency, or schedule as confirmed until that process is complete,” it said.

AirBorneo also stressed that its immediate focus remains on strengthening its existing operations following service disruptions earlier this month.

“Our current priority remains stabilising and strengthening our current intra-Borneo operations following the service disruptions earlier this month, which are now well into recovery.

“We are committed to getting the fundamentals right for our existing routes first,” it said.

The airline added that any confirmed network expansion plans would be announced through its official channels at the appropriate time.

The Nation, one of Bangkok’s English-language dailies, cited the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) as saying that AirBorneo had been allocated airport slots to operate 14 weekly flights on the Kuching-Suvarnabhumi-Kuching route during the Winter 2026/2027 schedule. — The Borneo Post

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Proceedings against five Japanese men linked to an international scam syndicate were delayed at the Magistrates’ Court in Bukit Mertajam today after language barriers prevented charges from being read out.

Berita Harian reported that all five accused — identified as Nakahara Riku, Matsumoto Ryuto, Dono Harisu, Inaba Sho and Umeda Tokeya — are in their 20s to 40s and do not understand either Malay or English.

As a result, the charges could not be formally read to them during today’s proceedings.

Magistrate Roshayati Radellah instead fixed June 22 for mention of the case to allow a Japanese-speaking interpreter to be present in court.

The court also denied bail for all five accused.

The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Zulfadzli Hassan, while the accused were not represented by counsel.

Earlier reports said police in Penang had dismantled three international scam syndicates in separate raids on call centre premises around Bukit Mertajam earlier this month.

The syndicates were believed to be involved in love scams, cryptocurrency fraud and phone scams, and were reportedly operating by impersonating Japanese police officers to deceive victims in Japan and Taiwan.

PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — The Ministry of Economy is set to deliver a ministerial statement addressing the global energy crisis and worldwide supply chain disruptions when Parliament reconvenes on June 22, Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir confirmed.

He said the statement would include a debate session to allow MPs to discuss the government’s actions and plans in addressing the impact of the crisis on the national economy.

“For this upcoming session, we will table a ministerial statement on the global energy and supply crises. Parliament has indicated that time will be allocated for this, and the statement will be followed by a debate,” he said during his address at the Ministry of Economy’s monthly gathering today.

Akmal Nasrullah said that the government, through the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), has increased its meeting frequency from six to 12 times a year due to pressures from the global crisis, with 124 decisions recorded so far.

He said Malaysia still recorded encouraging economic growth of 5.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, while the inflation rate remained low at 1.9 per cent.

Akmal Nasrullah said approved foreign direct investment for the first quarter of 2026 amounted to RM92.8 billion, with Japan emerging as the largest investor at RM21.5 billion, particularly in the digital and technological transformation sectors.

He said China and the United States each recorded investments of RM10.1 billion, while domestic investment increased by 13 per cent to RM36.6 billion compared to the same period last year.

In a separate development, Akmal Nasrullah said the ministry is reviewing project applications under the 13MP, with an emphasis on more realistic and achievable implementation within the current economic climate.

He said the budget screening process is currently underway at the ministry level to assess the suitability of the submitted projects and programmes, taking into account current fiscal challenges and global economic pressures.

“The assessment also takes into account several more thorough and realistic considerations, rather than simply looking good on paper.

‘We must ensure that the continuity of the programmes or projects we arrange can be executed within the timeframe, taking into account the constraints we currently face,” he said.

Akmal Nasrullah said that while the 13MP focuses on long-term development up to 2030, the government needs to make several adjustments to ensure that economic growth can be sustained in 2027, adding that the ministry is facing the challenge of balancing the need for immediate intervention to address the global energy and supply crises and maintaining the country’s medium- and long-term development planning.

“On one hand, we have to review the interventions that need to be made now, but at the same time, we are also looking into the requirements for 2027 and must maintain the spirit of five-year planning,’ he said.

He said 2026 is a period of implementation and delivery that requires adaptation to all current constraints without compromising the country’s development goals.

The ongoing global crisis, he said, should not hinder efforts to restructure the national economy, but should be leveraged as an opportunity to strengthen Malaysia’s economic resilience. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is inviting registered landowners, developers and members of the public to submit applications for amendments to the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040), which is currently in force as the capital’s primary development reference document.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud said interested parties must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to DBKL’s City Planning Department (JPRB) by 5pm on July 10.

The letter must include the justification for the proposed amendment, a clear location or site plan, and the latest land title documents for the site concerned.

“The implementation of amendments to a gazetted local plan is a dynamic measure that takes into account the need to align current policies and address international economic challenges within the context of ongoing urban planning and development.

“It is also intended to facilitate a comprehensive planning mechanism that enables the review of land-use zoning, development intensity and development control parameters in a systematic manner, as provided for under the Federal Territory (Planning) Act 1982 (Act 267),” he said in a statement today.

Fadlun said PTKL2040, which was gazetted on May 28 last year and came into effect on June 11 this year, is a statutory document that translates the strategic direction of the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (PSKL2040) into spatial planning policies.

He said amendments to the local plan are subject to Section 17(1) of Act 267, which empowers the mayor to propose amendments, revisions, revocations or replacements of all or part of a gazetted local plan at any time.

Applicants will be informed of the requirement to appoint a registered town planner to prepare a Local Plan Amendment Proposal Report based on the scope of their application, he added.

Fadlun said the Manual for the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan Amendment Proposal Report will be available through the Kuala Lumpur Development Plan portal from today.

Meanwhile, he said DBKL has introduced new Guidelines on Incentives for the Implementation of Kuala Lumpur Redevelopment Projects to replace and enhance existing provisions related to urban redevelopment incentives.

The guidelines, developed following a review of the Kuala Lumpur Urban Renewal Implementation Guide 2021 and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Redevelopment Incentive Breakdown Guidelines 2023, will take effect immediately and are available on DBKL’s official website.

The new guidelines will be adopted and take effect from today, and are available on DBKL’s official website at dbkl.gov.my, he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — The Court of Appeal has granted the prosecution more time to locate former research assistant Yusoff Rawther and personally serve him with a notice of appeal against his acquittal on drug trafficking and imitation firearms charges.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the prosecution had sought an extension after failing to effect personal service of the notice of appeal on Yusoff, the respondent in the case.

A three-member bench chaired by Justice Datuk Azman Abdullah said the court was bound by legal precedent requiring personal service of the notice.

“Under Section 314 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the appellant (prosecution) must serve the notice personally on the respondent,” he said.

Justices Datuk Mohd Radzi Abdul Hamid and K Muniandy, who sat with him, agreed that compliance with the service requirement must come first before the appeal could proceed.

The court fixed September 8 for case mention and said it would later decide whether the appeal could proceed in Yusoff’s absence, depending on updates from the prosecution’s efforts to serve the notice.

Deputy public prosecutor Asnawi Abu Hanipah said attempts to serve the notice at Yusoff’s last known address in Penang had failed.

He said Yusoff’s lawyers had informed the prosecution that their client is currently in the United Kingdom.

Checks with the Immigration Department also showed that Yusoff left Malaysia in June last year.

Defence counsel Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali said his client is seeking asylum in the UK and does not intend to return to Malaysia.

“He sent me an email on June 1 informing me of the matter, but he is aware that the prosecution is appealing against the acquittal,” he said.

On June 12 last year, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur acquitted Yusoff of both charges without calling for his defence.

The court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove knowledge, custody and control of the drugs and imitation firearms.

Yusoff had been charged with trafficking 305g of cannabis allegedly found in his vehicle outside the Kuala Lumpur police surau on September 6, 2024.

He was also charged with possessing two imitation pistols outside a condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara on the same day.

The drug trafficking charge carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 30 years and not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction, while the imitation firearms charge carries up to one year’s jail, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both.

He has maintained throughout trial that the items were planted to frame him.

PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — Media literacy among the public needs to be strengthened so that people are better equipped to critically evaluate information and identify misleading content amid the rapid evolution of the digital media landscape, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said.

She said the ability to distinguish between credible information and manipulated content has become increasingly important as society enters a new era driven by generative artificial intelligence (AI), which is reshaping the global media ecosystem.

“By 2030, Malaysia will need a media ecosystem that is more resilient, innovative and trusted,” she said in her keynote address at the industry dialogue themed “Balancing Virality and Responsibility: Journalism Amid Speed, Trust and Impact” here today.

Teo said efforts to strengthen media literacy should be complemented by greater training in AI, digital verification and information security to ensure Malaysian journalists are well prepared for future challenges.

She also called for closer collaboration among the media industry, universities and the government in talent development and research related to media transformation.

Teo noted that content is now produced on an unprecedented scale, making it increasingly difficult for the public to distinguish between accurate information, misleading content and deliberately manipulated narratives.

“The major challenge in the attention economy is that algorithms do not necessarily reward the most accurate or beneficial content. In many cases, they prioritise content that triggers strong emotional reactions,” she said.

Despite growing pressure to deliver news rapidly across multiple platforms, Teo said the fundamental principles of journalism must remain unchanged, with facts needing to be checked, information verified and truth prioritised.

She said media organisations had traditionally competed to be the first to break a story, but the race had become far more demanding as news now travels in real time and audiences expect information to be available instantly.

“When an incident occurs, various versions of the story often circulate online before journalists have the opportunity to verify the facts. In such situations, media organisations face a difficult dilemma. If they are too slow, they risk being seen as lagging. If they are too fast, they risk making mistakes that could undermine their credibility,” she said.

Teo added that the future of the media would not be determined by virality alone, but by its ability to earn and sustain public trust.

“Trust is not built in a day. It is built when the media is willing to acknowledge mistakes and correct them openly. It is built when the media places the public interest above the pursuit of sensationalism,” she said.

She added that the media industry is complex and dynamic, and is best served through responsible self-regulation rather than excessive state intervention.

Teo said this understanding had guided the Madani Government’s efforts to establish the Malaysian Media Council (MMC), which was successfully formed in 2025 after years of discussions and advocacy by industry stakeholders.

On the council’s complaints mechanism, she said Phase Two was implemented on April 8 this year and had already shown encouraging progress, with 14 complaints involving issues such as reporting accuracy, the unauthorised use of images and matters affecting social harmony received in less than two months.

Of the total complaints received, 12 have been resolved, while the remaining cases are under review. — Bernama

GEORGE TOWN, June 15 — The Penang government is working towards ensuring all 28 Tamil vernacular schools in the state eventually obtain ownership of their land, said State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo.

The chairman of the state special committee for Tamil schools said the state is in the process of securing land for all Tamil schools in the state.

He said the committee, which has been in operation for the past three years, has already succeeded in obtaining five pieces of land for five schools, with another five expected to follow within the next two to three years.

“Our focus is very clear. First, we want all 28 Tamil schools in Penang to have their own land,” he said in a press conference after attending a handing over ceremony of an approval letter for the construction of a new building for SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam with deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh.

Sundarajoo said the state had recently allocated a 2.3-acre site for SJKT Rajaji’s relocation project, with the new school building to be constructed through a developer’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) contribution.

“This means the school can be built without financial burden to the state government,” he said.

He said the Rajaji project is part of a broader push to accelerate Tamil school development in Penang, with at least three groundbreaking ceremonies expected to take place this year.

Sundarajoo also said the state would resume work on previously delayed projects, including schools in Sungai Bakap and Juru, both of which are classified as Tamil vernacular schools requiring redevelopment.

He described the developments as a significant milestone for Tamil education in Penang, noting that multiple projects are being advanced simultaneously for the first time under the special committee’s coordination.

“This year will be historic for Tamil schools in Penang because we are able to carry out groundbreaking for three schools within a single year,” he said.

In addition to land and construction efforts, Sundarajoo said the committee is also coordinating support for school infrastructure needs, including furniture such as chairs and desks, with assistance from federal initiatives led by Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA).

He said the combined efforts of state and federal agencies reflect a coordinated approach to improving Tamil school infrastructure across Penang, particularly for long-established schools facing ageing facilities and space constraints.

GEORGE TOWN, June 15 — The federal government has guaranteed that no vernacular schools will be closed under its administration, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said today.

He reaffirmed Putrajaya’s commitment to protect the existing Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools in Malaysia.

Wong said vernacular schools remain an important component of the national education system and dismissed long-standing concerns among communities over the fate of schools facing enrolment, land or infrastructure challenges.

“Under the Madani government, we guarantee that no school, whether a national school, SJKC or SJKT, will be closed,” he said in his speech after attending a handing over ceremony of an approval letter for the construction of a new building for SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam here.

He said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek had repeatedly stressed since 2023 that vernacular schools are part of Malaysia’s education landscape and would continue to receive government support.

The deputy minister also announced that maintenance allocations for Tamil vernacular schools nationwide have been increased to RM50 million this year, more than double the annual allocations provided in recent years.

“The funding will benefit about 527 SJKTs nationwide,” he said adding that the Education Ministry is finalising the distribution of the allocations based on the schools’ individual needs and enrolment levels.

“We will not simply divide the allocation equally because some schools are larger, some are smaller, and their maintenance requirements differ,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said 22 government-aided SJKTs in Penang will receive furniture worth RM1.156 million through an initiative funded by the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra).

On SJKT Rajaji, Wong officially handed over the ministry’s approval letter for the construction of the school’s new location in Farlim.

The 76-year-old school, which currently has about 100 pupils and 20 preschoolers, will relocate to a 2.3-acre site provided by the Penang state government.

He said construction is expected to cost about RM8 million and will be fully funded by a private developer.

The project is targeted for completion within 18 months, with the school expected to begin operating at its new premises by the 2029 academic session.

Wong said the approval reflected the government’s commitment to developing schools across all education streams, including national, Chinese vernacular and Tamil vernacular schools.

“Whether it is a national school, SJKC or SJKT, all are under the focus and radar of the Ministry of Education,” he said.

KOTA KINABALU, June 15 — Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali has again urged goods and public land transport companies in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan to register immediately under the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) to enjoy the diesel subsidy benefits.

He said registration would enable eligible companies to receive fleet cards and enjoy subsidised diesel rates of RM2.15 per litre for goods transportation and RM1.88 per litre for public land transport operators.

Armizan said applications for the SKDS for the goods transport sector were extended to Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan on May 4.

“The mandatory use of SKDS fleet cards to obtain diesel subsidies for the goods and public land transport sectors will be enforced on a date to be announced later. Therefore, companies in both sectors are urged to register under SKDS as soon as possible.

“This is important to ensure that vehicles listed under the 33 eligible vehicle categories continue to receive subsidised diesel,” he told reporters after presenting the Petronas Fleet Card SmartPay to several companies that had obtained SKDS approval here today.

According to Armizan, a total of 8,060 companies across Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan had registered under SKDS, involving 29,631 vehicles, as of June 14.

He stressed that transport operators should take advantage of the registration process to avoid having to purchase diesel at market prices.

On a related matter, the minister said SKDS was introduced to address diesel subsidy leakages through a digital monitoring and enforcement mechanism.

“The fleet card system under SKDS is designed to ensure that diesel subsidies fully benefit the targeted recipients.

“It is also part of efforts to curb subsidy leakages through smuggling, abuse and misuse of subsidised diesel by foreign nationals and undocumented migrants,” he said.

Details on eligible vehicle categories and SKDS registration can be found on the MySubsidi portal at https://mysubsidi.kpdn.gov.my. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Kelantan police are closely monitoring more than 13,000 Rohingya residing across several districts in the state, including 5,373 individuals holding United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards.

According to the New Straits Times, authorities say about 8,000 others in the group are without UNHCR documentation.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the monitoring was necessary to ensure the community did not pose security or public order risks.

He said surveillance efforts were being carried out continuously by the Special Branch, which tracks movements and activities within the community.

“Many Rohingya choose to stay in Malaysia because they have relatives here and can find work opportunities,” he said at a press conference on Monday.

“However, we will continue to monitor their activities closely, including those with UNHCR cards and those without documentation.”

Yusoff said Rohingya communities in Kelantan were mainly concentrated in Kota Bharu, Padang Siam in Tanah Merah, Ketereh, Bunut Susu and Pasir Puteh.

He said police were also monitoring informal settlements, community schools, religious learning centres, and areas commonly referred to as “Mini Dhaka”.

He added that attempts by Rohingya migrants to enter Malaysia illegally via Kelantan remained high, with many intercepted at the border before reaching villages.

“Some work as labourers in the construction sector or plantations,” he said.

“We also receive reports of disputes involving members of the community, but these are generally internal issues.”

Yusoff said some long-term residents were allegedly involved in cross-border smuggling activities, including acting as transporters for illegal migrants and joining criminal syndicates.

From January to May this year, Kelantan police recorded 412 cases involving Rohingya individuals, resulting in 825 arrests.

He said 277 cases involving 723 arrests were recorded last year, while a cumulative total of 689 cases involving 1,548 arrests had been recorded as of May this year.

Immigration offences made up the bulk of cases, followed by smuggling-related offences and property crimes, with a small number of violent incidents also recorded.

Yusoff said investigations showed the community was generally not involved in drug-related offences.

He added that detainees arrested for immigration offences were usually transferred to immigration depots or prisons after processing, rather than being held in police lock-ups.

“We will continue to monitor developments involving the Rohingya community to ensure public safety and security are maintained,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — A total of 66,204 online scam cases have been recorded so far this year, marking an 87 per cent increase compared with last year, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said.

According to The Star, the sharp rise highlights the growing threat posed by cybercriminals despite ongoing enforcement actions and public awareness campaigns.

Mohd Khalid said the worrying increase in scam cases has also been accompanied by rising financial losses, with victims losing RM2.97 billion last year — an increase of RM1.40 billion compared with 2024.

He said phone scams remained the most commonly reported category, with 28,388 cases recorded.

However, investment scams involving non-existent schemes caused the highest financial losses, amounting to RM1.47 billion.

Mohd Khalid said scam syndicates are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using digital platforms and technology to target unsuspecting victims.

“These figures are not merely statistics. Behind every case is an individual or family that has suffered financial hardship and emotional distress,” he said in a speech at the launch of the Combat Scam campaign on Monday (June 15).

He added that the rapid growth of digital services and online transactions had created new opportunities for fraudsters, making cooperation between authorities, financial institutions and the public essential in tackling cybercrime.

Mohd Khalid also praised the Combat Scam campaign, saying it strengthens collaboration between law enforcement and the banking sector while improving financial literacy and cybersecurity awareness among Malaysians.

“The fight against scams cannot be left solely to enforcement agencies. It requires the collective commitment of banks, government agencies and the public,” he said.

He urged the public to remain vigilant when conducting online transactions and to verify information through official channels before responding to any requests involving money or personal data.

KUCHING, June 15 — Direct Kuching-Bangkok flights have moved a step closer to reality after Thai aviation authorities allocated AirBorneo airport slots for services between the Sarawak capital and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport during the Winter 2026/2027 scheduling season.

According to a report by Thailand’s The Nation, AirBorneo was among four new airlines allocated airport slots during the 158th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Slot Conference in Bangkok.

The conference, held from June 9-11, coordinated and managed airport slot allocations for the Winter 2026/2027 schedule, with operations set to run from October 25, 2026 to March 27, 2027.

The report said the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) had disclosed the outcome of talks on revised flight schedules, additional flights, and new routes to Thailand, with AirBorneo allocated slots to operate 14 flights per week on the Kuching-Suvarnabhumi-Kuching route.

AirBorneo was listed alongside Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Air, United Kingdom’s Virgin Atlantic, and Moldova’s SkyUp Nistru, which also received slot allocations for services into Thailand.

The report noted that a total of 87 airlines held discussions with CAAT seeking to operate services for this tourism high season, covering both passenger and cargo flights from several regions around the world.

CAAT also identified Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Samui, and U-Tapao airports among those experiencing strong travel demand ahead of the upcoming high tourism season.

The allocation marks the latest development in AirBorneo’s plans to establish regional connections from Kuching.

Earlier this year, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the airline could expand to regional destinations including Thailand from 2027, subject to operational readiness.

The Borneo Post has contacted AirBorneo on the development and its plans for the proposed Kuching-Bangkok service. — The Borneo Post

PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — The recovery of global oil supplies is expected to take time despite a peace deal between the United States and Iran, following infrastructure damage and disruptions to strategic trade routes caused by the conflict.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the ongoing global geopolitical crisis has significantly impacted the national economy, particularly regarding oil supplies, adding that any positive developments towards peace are highly anticipated.

However, he noted that the impact on the oil market and the global economy would not be immediate, as the recovery process requires time.

“If it is true that a peace deal can be reached, its impact may take time because of the process of clearing routes in the Strait of Hormuz and repairing infrastructure damaged during the war. So, it will take time to fully recover,” he told reporters after the Ministry of Economy’s monthly gathering today.

He was asked to comment on recent developments regarding the peace agreement reached between the United States and Iran.

He said the Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global oil trade, and any disruption in the area carries implications for energy costs and inflationary pressures in many countries, including Malaysia.

Consequently, he said the Economy Ministry would continue to monitor developments and maintain mitigation measures to ease economic pressures, including through the National Economic Action Council (MTEN).

“At the Ministry of Economy level, we remain committed to exploring the roles we can play to ease the ongoing pressures until the situation provides a clearer picture that this crisis has truly ended,’ he said.

It was reported today that the United States and Iran have reached a peace agreement, calling for an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all conflict zones, including Lebanon, which directly signals the end of a conflict in West Asia that has dragged on for more than three months. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — All parties, including the director-general of the Community Communications Department (JKOM), Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, should avoid using inappropriate language when issuing statements, the Communications Ministry said.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching also urged all parties to steer clear of remarks touching on race, religion and royalty (3R) issues at all times, Harian Metro reported today.

“I think he has only just been appointed, but my advice is to avoid using inappropriate language and to avoid 3R issues not only during campaigns but at all times,” she told reporters after delivering the keynote address at the programme Balancing Virality and Responsibility: Journalism Amid Speed, Trust and Impact — An Industry Dialogue here today.

She said such an approach was necessary and strongly encouraged.

Nie Ching was responding to criticism against Hisyamuddin, also known as Syam Ghaz, particularly over the language used in his public statements following his appointment.

She also said she had not yet met the J-KOM chief, and was unsure whether Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had done so.

“I haven’t met him. I’m not sure whether Datuk Fahmi, the communications minister, has met him or not, as it was the weekend. I spent the weekend in Johor, so I have not met him,” she said.

Syam Ghaz, who was appointed on June 8, has faced criticism after a social media post on Saturday that was described by some as racist.

He has denied making racist remarks against the Chinese community, saying the phrase “Cina sesat” was directed at two individuals and had been misinterpreted.

In a video recording last night, Syam Ghaz said the Facebook post was meant as a response to former BN strategic communications director Eric See-To and whistleblower Albert Tei.

He said the post clearly named Lim Sian See and Albert Tei, and was not directed at any other parties.

Previously, it was reported that Syam Ghaz replaced Datuk Ismail Yusop, who ended his service earlier this month after more than a year leading the department.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — A press secretary to the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar has been urged to issue a public apology after allegedly mocking the state’s Undang Yang Empat institution by referring to DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke as the “fifth Undang”.

Umno Negeri Sembilan committee member Datuk Saiful Yazan Sulaiman said it was inappropriate to turn the Undang title into a political joke, according to a Sinar Harian report.

He said he took seriously a viral video on social media showing a government officer allegedly referring to Loke as the “fifth Undang” during the Pakatan Harapan Negeri Sembilan election machinery launch recently.

“I wish to stress that the Undang title is not a subject for political jokes. It carries its own position, history and dignity within the Adat Perpatih system and the state of Negeri Sembilan,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Saiful said linking any political leader to the Undang title, even in jest or satire, was inappropriate and showed a lack of sensitivity and understanding of the state’s adat institutions.

He added that it was more disappointing as the remark came from someone within the state administration, who should have upheld respect for local customs and institutions.

He also urged the menteri besar to state his position on the matter.

“The menteri besar cannot remain silent or treat this as trivial. Failure to act will create the impression that belittling adat institutions is accepted by the state government,” he said.

Saiful stressed that the people of Negeri Sembilan would not allow the state’s customs and heritage to be disrespected for political gain.

“The adat institution does not belong to any political party. It is the dignity of Negeri Sembilan,” he said.

“The officer concerned must issue a public apology to the people of Negeri Sembilan and the Undang Yang Empat institution without excuses or delay.”

Separately, Negeri Sembilan Umno Youth chief Mohamad Fadil Md Zin described the remark as rude and disgraceful.

He said, as a state resident, the individual should have been more sensitive, especially as he holds a position within the government.

“Umno Youth strongly condemns the use of the ‘fifth Undang’ title during the PH Negeri Sembilan machinery launch.

“The adat institution is not a joke and must be respected by all. As the saying goes, ‘better to lose a child than lose adat’,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan has been appointed chairman of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC), the self-regulatory body established under the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025.

In a statement today, the council said Nallini’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by members of the Malaysian Media Council Board at a meeting on May 26.

The council described the appointment as a significant milestone in strengthening its role as an independent, credible and public interest-driven self-regulatory body for the media industry.

“Her longstanding commitment to judicial independence, the rule of law and access to justice makes her uniquely qualified to lead the council as it begins its role in fostering a free, responsible and self-regulating media in Malaysia,” the statement read.

Nallini retired from the Federal Court in February after serving 18 years in the judiciary. During that time, she served at all three levels of the superior courts and authored about 325 reported judgments, including landmark decisions in constitutional and commercial law.

She was the first woman of South Asian descent appointed to Malaysia’s superior judiciary and practised law at Skrine for more than two decades before joining the bench. She currently serves as an arbitrator and mediator.

Nallini is also vice-chairman of the International Bar Association Judges’ Forum, a member of the Steering Group of the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts, and a judge at the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre.

Established under the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025, the MMC serves as the media industry’s self-regulatory body, with responsibilities that include strengthening journalistic standards, managing a public complaints mechanism, promoting ethical practices and safeguarding media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy.

The statement said the council, under Nallini’s leadership, would focus on strengthening its institutional framework, implementing its Code of Conduct, developing a fair and trusted complaints mechanism, and enhancing public understanding of the media’s role in a democratic society.

It will also prioritise legal reform initiatives involving the media, journalists and the public’s right to access accurate information, including efforts to promote a clearer and more balanced legal environment in line with the principles of freedom of expression, access to information, journalistic ethics and public interest.

According to the council, the appointment comes at a critical time for the media industry, which faces challenges including economic pressures, technological change, artificial intelligence (AI), misinformation and disinformation, threats against journalists, and the need to rebuild public trust in the media.

“The Malaysian Media Council is confident that Tan Sri Nallini’s leadership will help guide the council into a more mature, independent and credible phase, anchored on three core principles: standards, ethics and freedom,” it said. — Bernama

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 15 — Integrity and trustworthiness must continue to serve as the cornerstone of every level of the security forces to ensure public confidence in law enforcement institutions is maintained, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.

He said the strength of an organisation does not depend solely on physical facilities, buildings or sophisticated assets, but is determined by the integrity and honesty of its personnel.

According to him, an organisation may possess extensive experience, skills and complete assets, but without integrity, all of these hold little value.

“The true strength of an organisation lies in the honesty of each of its members. If integrity collapses, no matter how advanced the facilities it possesses, public trust will be lost.

‘If we lose wealth, we lose nothing. If we lose health, we lose something. But if we lose character, we lose everything. That is why integrity and moral values are so important in life,” he said when officiating the opening of the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters (IPD) here today.

Also present was Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad.

Elaborating further, Ayob Khan said the trust placed in every member of the force must always be safeguarded and should never be compromised.

At the same time, he stressed that there would be no tolerance for abuse of power, corruption or any form of disciplinary misconduct that could tarnish the image of the force and undermine public confidence.

“Never use rank as a shield against legal action. Anyone who betrays the public trust must face appropriate action, regardless of position or rank,” he said.

In a related development, he said today’s security challenges are becoming increasingly complex, with authorities no longer dealing solely with conventional crimes but also facing emerging threats such as cybercrime, online scam syndicates, cross-border smuggling and transnational crime.

In this regard, he said the police force must continue to strengthen its operational and investigative capabilities through a more proactive, swift and data-driven approach to ensure public safety remains safeguarded. — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — The Economy Ministry expects Malaysia’s inflation rate to remain under control at between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent throughout this year despite pressure from the energy supply crisis and global geopolitical uncertainties.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the government is committed to ensuring that inflation does not have a major shock effect on the economy and the people’s cost of living even though price pressures are expected to continue.

He said the country’s latest inflation rate was recorded at 1.9 per cent, much lower than the global inflation forecast of around 4.3 per cent.

“For 2026, our comfortable projection is for inflation to occur between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent. This is our target so that inflation movements remain within the scope that we can handle and do not have a significant impact on the people,” he told the media after the monthly gathering of the Economy Ministry here today.

He said this when asked to comment on the expected inflationary pressure in the second quarter of this year following the disruption of global energy supplies and its impact on the transportation and food sectors.

Akmal Nasrullah said the current inflationary pressure was due to the increase in costs related to oil supplies and input goods needed to maintain economic activity.

In this regard, he said the government is continuing various mitigation measures including the targeted distribution of fuel subsidies, control of logistics costs through the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS), as well as additional financing of RM5 billion through the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme (SJPP) and Bank Negara Malaysia facilities to help small businesses survive.

However, Akmal Nasrullah said inflationary pressures could increase if the global crisis continues.

“So far, we have managed to maintain inflation at around 1.9 per cent, but the pressure will continue to have an impact. That is why we continue to look at official data and the actual situation at the industry level so that intervention measures can be taken earlier,” he said. — Bernama

KOTA KINABALU, June 15 — The proclamation of the Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserve – Sabah’s second after the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve – marks a historic moment and a proud achievement for Sabah and Malaysia, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“The recognition by Unesco last year proves that the Kinabatangan landscape, covering approximately 413,866 hectares, possesses outstanding biodiversity value and ecological significance at the international level.

“This is another important milestone in the State’s continuous efforts to preserve environmental sustainability and biodiversity on the global stage.

“With this world-class status, the Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserve is expected to attract international attention in the fields of research, education, nature-based tourism and global collaboration opportunities,” he said.

Hajiji said this at the 12th anniversary celebration of the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve and the declaration ceremony of the Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserve at Padang Merdeka on Sunday.

He said the value of the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, which spans 350,584 hectares and was declared in 2014, is of great importance to Sabah.

More than one million people are estimated to live in nearly 400 villages across 10 districts within the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, namely Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Ranau, Tambunan, Keningau, Tenom, Beaufort, Papar and Membakut.

The recognition of the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve has contributed to Sabah attaining the Unesco Triple Crown Sites status.

As such, Hajiji called on all stakeholders to continue strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts, expanding community awareness programmes and enhancing strategic collaboration to ensure that the benefits of this recognition are widely and sustainably enjoyed.

“This is in line with the state government’s commitment to protecting and conserving nature, as ecosystem functions are crucial for the well-being of the people and socio-economic development.

“The existence of these two biosphere reserves is also closely linked to the Sabah state government’s efforts to realise the Sabah Maju Jaya initiative. This year, the conservation of Sabah’s important ecosystems continues under SMJ 2.0 for the 2026–2030 period,” he said.

Hajiji further said Sabah is now at the forefront of environmental protection and conservation efforts.

“For many years, Sabah has protected its forests, wildlife and some of the richest ecosystems in the region. At present, nearly 30 per cent of Sabah’s land area has been gazetted as Totally Protected Areas (TPAs).

“We are therefore determined to further strengthen Sabah’s role as a carbon sink, including through the Crocker Range and Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserves.

“Sabah remains a major net carbon sink, contributing about 36 per cent of Malaysia’s total carbon sequestration through its vast tropical forests.

“The key message is that biosphere reserves support the climate, particularly by functioning as carbon sinks,” he said.

Hajiji said both biosphere reserves are special areas where nature is protected and human activities are managed sustainably.

“The Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve protects mountain and forest ecosystems to conserve unique flora and fauna while supporting water catchment functions.

“Meanwhile, the Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserve focuses on river and wetland ecosystems, which are important habitats for wildlife and essential for maintaining healthy water systems.

“When forests are protected and allowed to recover and regenerate naturally, they continue to store carbon over the long term,” he said.

He said biosphere reserves also play an important role in strengthening local economies and that conservation is most effective when communities benefit from efforts to protect nature.

“In the Crocker Range and Kinabatangan, local communities can benefit through sustainable tourism, including homestays and community-based enterprises.

“These long-term livelihood opportunities encourage communities to continue protecting forests and wildlife because the environment becomes a stable source of income rather than a source of short-term gains,” he said.

“Therefore, we must ensure that the recognition of these two biosphere reserves brings benefits and economic spillover effects to all segments of society living within both biosphere reserve areas,” he said. — Daily Express

KOTA KINABALU, June 15 — Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has clarified its decision to conduct orientation and academic sessions online for selected foundation programmes after a viral social media post sparked confusion and concern among incoming students and parents.

The issue began after an internal university directive dated June 4 instructed that the Minggu Suai Mesra (MSM) orientation programme and Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran (PdP) sessions for students enrolled in the Foundation in Information Technology and Foundation in Social Sciences programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session be conducted entirely online.

According to the directive, the decision was made in line with the government’s preparedness measures in managing current geopolitical crisis risks.

Lecturers and students involved were instructed to ensure that all teaching and learning activities proceed according to the established schedule using suitable online platforms.

The directive quickly drew attention after a Threads post questioning the decision went viral, attracting approximately 1,600 likes, 41 comments and 71 reposts at the time of writing.

In the post, the user expressed shock that new students would not be required to attend physically on June 14 for registration but, instead, return home to continue their studies online for the entire semester.

The post also raised concerns about students who had already paid more than RM1,000 in fees, including accommodation charges and questioned the fate of students from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak who had already travelled to Sabah and incurred significant travel expenses.

“Students have already paid for residential college accommodation but are unable to stay in the accommodation they paid for. What exactly are they paying for?” the post read.

The post further argued that students who had already arrived in Sabah should at least be allowed to remain in campus accommodation while attending classes online, instead of being told to return home.

In response to the growing public reaction, UMS on Friday issued an official statement providing further clarification on the implementation of the online orientation and learning arrangement.

The university said the online implementation of MSM and PdP would apply only to the Foundation in Information Technology and Foundation in Social Sciences programmes for Semester 1 of the 2026/2027 academic session.

UMS explained that the decision was made in support of recommendations by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), which has encouraged higher education institutions to consider online teaching and learning as a measure to reduce travel costs and fuel consumption during the current period.

Acknowledging concerns raised by students and parents, the university stated that students who had already purchased flight tickets or made accommodation arrangements would still be allowed to attend and register on campus according to the scheduled dates.

The university also announced that students facing internet connectivity issues at their homes may apply for on-campus accommodation to ensure their studies can continue without disruption.

Addressing one of the key concerns circulating online, UMS said it is currently reviewing issues related to fees and other financial implications arising from the decision to ensure that any action taken is fair and takes into account the welfare of students and their families.

The university urged affected students and parents seeking further information to contact the UMS Centre for Science and Technology Preparatory Studies (PPST).

While the university’s statement addressed several concerns, questions regarding accommodation payments and potential financial adjustments remain under review as students await further details from the institution. — Daily Express

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 15 — The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has agreed to increase the allocation of the Community Sports Fund (DSK) for Penang after the state became one of the earliest and fastest to fully utilise the RM800,000 fund channelled this year.

Its minister, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, said the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN) will submit an application to secure the additional allocation.

“Penang is among the earliest and fastest to exhaust the Community Sports Fund. JBSN will submit an application, and I have agreed for Penang to receive additional funding.

“I urge youth organisations to use the funds as best as possible, move down to the grassroots level, and ensure that programmes continue to be implemented,” he said when officiating the state-level National Youth Day 2026 celebrations tonight.

He added that the DSK does not merely support sports activities and efforts to produce more athletes, but also serves as a platform to connect young people with the local community.

Mohammed Taufiq added that KBS has also channelled the Sports Matching Grant for Window 1 and Window 2 totalling RM500,000, as well as Assistance to Youth Organisations for the Year 2026 amounting to RM106,000 to Penang.

According to him, the allocation represents a government investment to expand access to community sports activities, empower youth organisations, encourage a healthy lifestyle, and increase youth participation in youth and sports development programmes.

He also urged youth organisations in Penang to actively apply for Sejati Madani funds after the Prime Minister approved an allocation of RM250 million for the benefit of youth organisations across the country.

He said youth development programmes need to be implemented continuously rather than as one-off events so that they can deliver a high impact and direct benefits to the target group.

Also present was the state youth, sports, and health committee chairman, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Parti Bersama Malaysia is aiming to field 70 per cent of its election candidates aged under 50, including for the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan polls.

Free Malaysia Today reported that Bersama president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said the party will also prioritise female representation, with efforts to field as many women candidates as possible.

“We need women candidates of calibre from the Malay, Chinese and Indian communities to join us,” he was quoted as saying during an event in Negeri Sembilan.

Rafizi also urged members not to dispute the party’s seat allocation process, stressing that candidates would be selected based on suitability rather than gender or ethnicity.

“Eligible candidates will be matched with the appropriate seats. Some seats are more suitable for Malay candidates, while others are suited to Chinese or Indian candidates. The process for this is quite complicated.

“There is still a 30 per cent allocation for candidates aged 50 and above, which is a sizeable number, especially if Bersama contests all seats,” he said.

He added that Bersama’s decision to remain outside political coalitions gives it flexibility to contest more seats.

The party, which was launched three weeks ago, has reportedly attracted about 25,000 members, none of whom are established political figures, Rafizi said.

He described the turnout as a strong early showing, saying he initially did not expect much interest when the party was formed.

“I thought only crazy people would join, because this party is going up against all the other parties and doesn’t have any big names,” he said.

Rafizi added that Bersama hopes to grow its membership to 50,000 if momentum continues.

KOTA BHARU, June 15 — The absence of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in the Kampung Gok Kapur area here during the June 8 incident has not hindered the forensic expertise of the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) from identifying the actual cause of the massive fire.

Despite the residential area lacking video surveillance technology, the fire investigation team utilised scientific methods by analysing “burn patterns” at the scene to track down the point of origin.

Kelantan JBPM Director, Farhan Sufyan Borhan, said that through this physical evidence, guided by statements from “four main witnesses”, the fire department has successfully narrowed down the scope of the investigation.

He added that meticulous forensic examination at the fire’s point of origin revealed that all electrical systems and equipment connections were in good condition, thereby completely ruling out the short-circuit theory.

“For now, we have also ruled out the possibility of arson based on the evidence and information gathered so far. The preliminary investigation is now pointing toward the possibility of the fire originating from cooking activities or playing with fire in the area,” he told Bernama yesterday.

According to him, the element of human negligence is still being considered in the investigation, and focus is now fully directed toward the clues with the highest probability of being confirmed as the absolute cause.

He added that the lack of digital CCTV evidence did not slow down the investigation team’s momentum.

“A high level of commitment is being demonstrated by Kelantan JBPM to ensure justice and immediate answers are provided to the affected victims. According to the department’s Key Performance Indicators, the full forensic investigation report is guaranteed to be fully completed within 14 days from the date of the incident,” he said.

On June 8, a total of 27 houses were destroyed in a fire in Kampung Gok Kapur, while the forensic team from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department is still conducting investigations to identify the cause of the incident. — Bernama
